Building Clever Companies

Over the course of several years, Council has developed a long-standing partnership with Building Clever Companies (BCC) - New Zealand’s specialist business development organisation - who support startups in agriculture, agritech and agrifood. 

BCC’s 'Innovate' programme is just one of the many opportunities they facilitate – this annual competition turns ideas into reality and rewards selected participant’s solid grounding for their business model, as well as an incredible mentor network.

Business Mentors New Zealand are experienced professionals who know what it means to be in business. Their mentoring programme recognises the importance of a vibrant and healthy SME (small-medium enterprise).

Regional Development

Manawatu-Whanganui Regional Growth Study

In July 2015, Central Government launched the Manawatu-Whanganui Regional Growth Study, which identified a number of opportunities and key enables to help realise our region’s economic potential. The implementation programme from this study is known as Accelerate25.

Bringing it home – opportunities for Tararua…

The Regional Growth Study identified eight opportunities for growing investment, incomes and employment in the region - three of these are specific to Tararua:
 

  1. Tourism and visitor services
    (primarily Ruapehu and Whanganui but also Rangitikei)
  2. Sheep and beef farming and processing
    (entire region, particularly within Whanganui, Rangitikei, Manawatu and Tararua)
  3. Land use intensification
    (Rangitikei, Manawatu, Tararua and Horowhenua)
  4. Manuka honey
    (Rangitikei, Whanganui, Ruapehu and Tararua)
  5. Fresh vegetables
    (Horowhenua, Rangitikei and Ruapehu)
  6. Poultry and grain processing
    (Horowhenua, Rangitikei and Manawatu)
  7. Affordable care and lifestyle for older people
    (initially in Horowhenua but also Whanganui)
  8. Business process outsourcing and food innovation outsourcing
    (across the region but centred on Palmerston North)
