Hazelnut - an alternative land use option
“Hazelnuts could potentially deliver returns exceeding those from dairy farming if growers could achieve the yields and orchard management costs efficiencies seen in places like Chile and Oregon – which have similar environments to New Zealand...."
As farmers, we are facing increasing constraints on how we farm as we reach the environmental limits of our old farming system. Additionally, we are facing increased volatility in our commodity based markets.
Current trends indicate that we need to focus on supplying the world’s most affluent 5%. The focus of these top end markets is healthy, convenient food produced on farms using sound environmental practices.
Do we have new environmentally friendly land use options that can feed into that affluent health conscious market?
Medical research has shown that nuts are an important part of a healthy diet. Studies have also shown that hazelnuts could potentially be grown in many locations throughout New Zealand, including most of the areas where new irrigation projects offer the potential for significant land use intensification.
New industries need a source of reliable information and the Hazelnut Growers Association of NZ (HGANZ), supported by the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) ‘Sustainable Farming Fund’ and the NZ Tree Crops Association (NZTCA), are producing a series of information bulletins highlighting the key aspects of growing hazelnuts in New Zealand.
To support these bulletins, three workshops will be held in the North Island. These workshops will offer land owners, land use planners, and food industry businesses (who may be looking for local nut supplies) a chance to meet and receive the latest information on this new crop.
More information on individual workshops can be found on www.eventfinda.co.nz (search Hazelnut).
