Selling food at events

As the holiday season nears, there are more opportunities for individuals to sell food at occasional events.

If you are thinking of holding a food stall there are a few things you need to do; it is a good idea to contact the Council and talk through your ideas with the Environmental Health Officer if you are unsure of the rules.

Food Stall Applications are available from the Tararua District Council - it is best to plan ahead and have your application in at least 5 days before your event.

Things to consider when preparing your stall is the equipment and people that will be assisting, in most cases a separate cash handler will be required.

Remember, if you are using gloves they must fit the size of your hand, and will need to be changed often, especially if handling raw and cooked foods.

All foods, including meat, must be purchased from an approved supplier like the supermarket or butcher. It is illegal to sell or commercially prepare home kill meat or recreational catch.

Remember to keep Hot Food hot (above 60°C) and Cold Food cold (below 4°C). Use an icepack and chilly-bin to keep food cold outdoors.
