Council's Planning Department is here to help promote sustainable management of the environment and to help ensure Tararua District remains a pleasant place for people to live, work and play.

The Planning Department looks after resource consents and the preparation and monitoring of the District Plan. Provision of advice is a major component of these activities.

Unauthorised activities
If you are undertaking any building, project or activity that may require consent or licence from Council under legislation or any bylaw, please check with Council prior to beginning. The cost of obtaining a consent or licence prior to beginning your activity is often far less expensive than the cost you will pay if Council has to undertake corrective action to obtain compliance.

Tararua District Council has a Financial Contributions Policy but no Development Contributions Policy.

If your project could impact on the environment or other people, you may require a resource consent.
The District Plan places controls on land use and subdivision to achieve sustainable management of the Tararua’s natural and physical resources.
These are changes proposed by private parties or by Council to the District Plan. They must go through an RMA consultation process.
