Notice of 2016 Triennial Local Authority Elections

The following elections will be held by postal vote on Saturday, 8 October 2016.

Tararua District Council

(First Past the Post Electoral System)

  • Election of the mayor
  • Election of four councillors for the North Tararua Ward
  • Election of four councillors for the South Tararua Ward
  • Election of four members for the Dannevirke Community Board
  • Election of four members for the Eketahuna Community Board

Candidate names will be listed in random order on the voting documents.

The Electoral Officer will hold an information session for prospective candidates in the Woodville Community Centre at 7pm, Wednesday 27 July 2016. Anyone interested in becoming a candidate is invited to attend.

MidCentral District Health Board (DHB)

(Single Transferable Voting Electoral System)

Election of seven members at large by the residents within the MidCentral DHB area.

  • Election of two members for the Horowhenua-Kairanga Constituency
  • Election of two members for the Manawatu-Rangitikei Constituency
  • Election of four members for the Palmerston North Constituency
  • Election of one member for the Ruapehu Constituency
  • Election of one member for the Tararua Constituency
  • Election of two members for the Wanganui Constituency

Candidate names will be listed in alphabetical order on the voting documents.

Nominations for the above positions open on Friday, 15 July 2016 and must be made on the appropriate nomination paper for each position. Nomination papers and the candidate handbook can be either on the relevant council or DHB website, or by phoning the contact numbers provided.

Completed nomination documents must be received by the relevant electoral officer no later than 12 noon on Friday, 12 August 2016. Each nomination must be accompanied by a deposit of $200 in GST, payable by eftpos, cash, cheque or on-line banking (see candidate handbook or nomination form for details).

Candidates are encouraged to submit a candidate profile statement and colour photograph for sending out with voting documents to electors. The requirements for profile statements and photos are set out in the candidate handbook which is available with the nomination papers.

MidCentral District Health Board candidates must also submit a conflict of interest statement with their nominations. Requirements for the conflict of interest statement are included in the candidate handbook for the MidCentral DHB.

All nomination documents must be lodged together. Candidates should refer to the candidate handbook for further details.

Electoral Rolls

Preliminary electoral rolls for the above elections and polls can be inspected at city and district council offices in the area including the following locations during normal office hours from Friday, 15 July 2016 to Friday, 12 August 2016:

  • Dannevirke Service Centre, 26 Gordon Street, Dannevirke
  • Eketahuna Service Centre/Library, 31 Main Street, Eketahuna
  • Pahiatua Service Centre, 136 Main Street, Pahiatua
  • Woodville Service Centre, 45 Vogel Street, Woodville
  • Dannevirke Community Library, 1 Station Street, Dannevirke
  • Pahiatua Community Library, 167 Main Street, Pahiatua
  • Woodville Community Library, 42 Vogel Street, Woodville

Electors may enrol or amend their enrolment details on the residential electoral roll by:

  • Completing an enrolment form available at postshops, public libraries or council offices
  • Calling 0800 ENROL  NOW (0800 36 76 56)
  • Visiting the Elections website (

Updates to the preliminary electoral roll close at 5pm on Friday, 12 August 2016.

Applications for registration as a ratepayer elector are to be made on the non-resident ratepayer elector enrolment form available wherever copiers of the electoral rolls are displayed and must be returned to the Tararua District Council Electoral Officer between 5pm Friday, 12 August 2016.
