Future of the Dannevirke Carnegie Building

Thank you for your feedback. Consultation closed on Friday, 10 May. The Council considered the public feedback at the Council meeting on Wednesday 29 May, and the following decision was made:

Council has deferred the decision to demolish the Carnegie Building for a six-month period in order to enable a community initiative to be prepared for the Council's consideration to strengthen and modify the building .

Background

Tararua District Council, at its meeting held on 27 March 2019, determined as aligned with its adopted Long Term Plan it intends to demolish the Dannevirke Carnegie building in the 2019 calendar year based on the estimated cost of one million dollars if it is strengthened and renovated in accordance with the Building Act 2004, and its preference is to replace this building with Council pensioner housing situated on the site.

Feedback is invited from the community regarding their preferred options for use of this land and Council’s proposed intention, and also the option to retain part of the façade as a memorial to the building and its history.  A final decision will be made by Council at its meeting on 29 May 2019 whether to confirm its proposed intention regarding this property.

Consultation Report
