The Tararua District Cyclone Gabrielle Recovery Programme is focused on working with our people and communities to recover from the impacts of Cyclone Gabrielle, and to build resilience for our future.

Five workstreams are delivering the Recovery work plan:

Each workstream will coordinate recovery priorities and activities with local iwi and local, regional and national stakeholders.

12 September 2023

Tararua on Track Fund The Tararua District has secured $1 million for urgent maintenance and resilience works on farms, as part of the Ministry for Primary Industries $35.4 million package to support the recovery of rural communities affected by North Island Weather events, including Cyclone Gabrielle.

Government Cyclone Recovery Unit Newsletter – includes an update on confirmed changes to the bright-line test for cyclone-damaged properties, central government support to Nelson homeowners affected by Cyclone Gabrielle and confirmed resilience projects to state highways.

31 August 2023

Community marks opening of the Marainanga Gorge Road. The road was extensively damaged during Cyclone Gabrielle, with approximately 300m completely washed away into the Aohanga River, and has not been open to the public since February 14.

Government Cyclone Recovery Unit Newsletter – includes an update on the Governments cost sharing arrangements with Auckland Council and Tairawhiti and information on Parliament’s Environment Committee conducting an inquiry into community-led retreat and adaptation funding.

Te Radar visit a resounding success - On Friday 25th of August, the Tararua Cyclone Recovery Programme and Rural Support Trust hosted well known New Zealand comedian Te Radar in Tararua, visiting some of the people most affected by Cyclone Gabrielle.
