Tararua District Council and MBIE Cyclone Gabrielle - Business Support Package

Tararua District Council and Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) are partnering to support businesses as they start to recover from the effects of cyclone Gabrielle. Businesses who have been affected are encouraged to apply to the fund. Some simple criteria will need to be met and we welcome calls to discuss the fund before you make an application. For successful applicants’ additional bank account details will be asked for so payment can be made.

This approach may help us speed up the possibility of releasing funds to you within four to five working days.

Funding criteria:

  • be primarily located where a regional State of Emergency was declared.
  • face significant cashflow issues due to continued challenges with customer access, ability to source stock, inability to operate as usual due to physical damage to equipment or premises, or delays in insurance assessment and repairs.
  • be an otherwise viable business both before and after the flooding.
  • not have received any funding from the MPI recovery fund.
  • commit to acting in line with employment law and with due regard to its employees.
  • Sole traders and self-employed people can apply
  • Businesses that support farming and horticulture will be eligible. (Farmers, growers, and whenua Māori owners can access a separate $25 million primary sector support fund; Cyclone Gabrielle recovery: advice, support, and funding | mpi.govt.nz)

Further, grants to be:

  • no more than $40,000 total per business supported (excluding GST if any)
  • for an amount proportionate to the true and actual financial challenges faced by the business due to the cyclone
  • applied for, and granted, no more than once per eligible business.
