New councillors officially come into office the day after the Final Results are announced. So, if results come out on Thursday 16 October, the newly elected Council will take office on Friday 17 October 2025. The current councillors stay in office until the end of the day the Final Results are made public. We will share the final results on our website and Facebook, and the declaration of Final Results will be published in the next available edition of the Bush Telegraph newspaper.

The Tararua District Council currently operates its elections under the First Past the Post electoral system (FPP).

This form of voting is used in parliamentary elections to elect Members of Parliament to constituency seats.

Electors vote by indicating their preferred candidate(s) and the candidate(s) that receives the most votes is declared the winner, regardless of the proportion of votes that candidate(s) obtained.
