Central Government has given councils across New Zealand a 3-month deadline to develop an amalgamation plan for their area.

We're holding public meetings across the district to hear community views on the potential options for Tararua. For anyone that can't make the meetings, we're asking you to vote online for your preference.

These options are proposed with the understanding that:

  • the proposed groupings will stay the same – which is highly unlikely; and
  • the councils we may want to amalgamate with also want to amalgamate with us; and
  • financial and rating impacts would still need to be worked through.

Likely Tararua seats in a new council = 2–3. If this extends to Wellington = 0.

Likely Tararua seats in a new Council = 1.

Different areas go in different directions.
