Ākitio Cell Tower Generator
As part of Tararua’s Cyclone Gabrielle recovery, a dedicated generator was installed at the Ākitio cell tower to strengthen communications resilience for this remote coastal community.
During the cyclone, Ākitio and surrounding areas lost power and communications for several days, leaving residents isolated. With support from Department of Internal Affairs funding, the new generator now ensures the tower can keep operating during power outages, maintaining vital phone and internet services.
This project provides a lifeline for residents, farmers, and visitors in emergencies, giving greater confidence that Ākitio will stay connected when it matters most.
