Dannevirke Water Resilience Projects

Improving Dannevirke's water resilience

Tararua District Council is investing in a series of projects to strengthen and future-proof Dannevirke’s water supply system.

Following issues identified with the impounded water supply in 2021, investigations confirmed the reservoir remains stable and operational. Since then, Council has focused on improving the resilience of the wider water supply network through a number of key projects.

These projects will help ensure Dannevirke has:

  • more reliable water storage
  • improved treatment capability during poor river conditions
  • greater access to stored water
  • improved security of supply during dry periods or emergencies

Together, these projects will create a more resilient and flexible water supply system for Dannevirke now and into the future.

    History of the impounded supply

Dannevirke’s impounded water supply plays an important role in storing raw water for treatment and use across the town.

In 2021, leakage was identified in the impounded supply, prompting detailed investigations, inspections, and repair works. Since then, Council has worked with engineers, geotechnical specialists, and dam safety experts to assess the condition of the reservoir and identify long-term solutions.

Repairs to the liner were completed, including patching tears and reinforcing areas beneath the liner system. Ongoing monitoring has shown the impounded supply has stabilised and is functioning as designed.

Rather than relying on a single solution, Council is taking a broader resilience approach by improving treatment capability, increasing storage, and improving access to stored water.
