Please help our open stormwater drains keep flowing

14 September 2026

Across Tararua, some private properties have open stormwater drains that run past them or even through them. These drains play an important role in moving stormwater through our communities, particularly during or after heavy rain.

To help keep water flowing freely, please don’t put garden waste or other rubbish into open drains, such as:

  • Branches
  • Leaves and weeds
  • Grass clippings and garden trimmings
  • Rubbish and other debris

Even natural materials can build up over time, blocking culverts and crossings, restricting water flow and increasing the risk of flooding nearby properties, including your own.

If you have an open drain near your property, please help by keeping an eye out for anything that could obstruct the flow and disposing of garden waste appropriately.

A clear drain helps keep water moving when we need it most. If you have questions about a particular open drain, get in touch with Tararua District Council on: 06 374 4080 or 06 374 0110 or info@tararuadc.govt.nz
