Adapting to change and delivering for rangatahi

25 May 2026

The Mayors Taskforce for Jobs (MTFJ) has made a strong start to 2026, supporting around 50 rangatahi (young adults) since the New Year (Jan-Mar) through MSD and self-referrals.

While entry-level employment opportunities remain limited in the current economic climate, seven WINZ clients have secured employment and have been helped off the benefit, while six other rangatahi (non- WINZ clients) have also moved into work.

A key highlight this quarter has been the volume of training completed in Feb and March, equipping participants with practical, work-ready skills:

  • Forklift Training: 8 certifications, 2 F endorsements
  • Licensing: 6 Learner Licences, 3 Restricted Licences, 4 Defensive Driving, 1 Full Licence.
  • Construction & Industry Skills: 4 Working at Heights Certifications, 1 Wheels,Tracks & Rollers Endorsement
  • Specialist Qualifications: 1 Dangerous Goods Endorsement, 1 Licensed Controller Qualification (LCQ) 1 Traffic Management (TTMW + TMO-NP).

This uptake in training reflects MTFJ’s continued focus on preparing candidates for employment, even when job opportunities are tight.

By building qualifications and confidence now, participants are better positioned to move quickly when roles become available.

MTFJ remains committed to ensuring local rangatahi are not just looking for work—but are ready for it when opportunities arise.
