Batteries DO NOT belong in your recycling or rubbish bins
16 March 2026
Last week, household batteries were found in the back of our kerbside recycling truck. This is a serious fire risk.
Batteries can spark and ignite when compacted in collection trucks. Across New Zealand and overseas, there has been a significant increase in fires at transfer stations, landfills and in collection vehicles due to incorrectly disposed batteries.
We only have one recycling truck servicing our district. A truck fire would not only put our staff at risk, but could also disrupt recycling services for the entire community.
Please do not place household batteries in your recycling or general rubbish bins.
You can drop off household batteries for free at any of our our Transfer Stations.
Thank you for helping keep our staff safe and protecting our recycling service.
