Preferred Owner Status - reduced fees for responsible owners

16 February 2026

Tararua District Council offers reduced registration fees for dog owners that achieve “preferred owner status”.

Preferred Owner Status is a special dog owner status that recognises good, responsible dog owners. If approved, you will pay less for your dog’s yearly registration than the standard fee.

Your dog must be registered for at least a year before you are eligible to apply for the Preferred Owner Status.

How to become a preferred owner:

1. Ensure that you meet the compulsory criteria:

Adequate housing for the dogs – more information on application form.

No impounding, infringements, justified complaints, or late registration payments/penalties within the last two years.

Existing dog numbers comply with Tararua District Council Bylaws (e.g., a permit is required if you keep three or more dogs on a property less than one hectare).

All dogs owned or kept by you must have a current registration at all times, and comply with micro-chipping requirements.

2. Applications must be made before the last Friday in April, to be eligible for the reduced fee for the following registration year. All approvals are subject to a satisfactory property inspection and administrative checks.

You can get the forms from your nearest Council Service Centre or Library or download the form at Dog Registration | Tararua District Council
