LIFTED - Boil Water Notice for Eketāhuna

24 January 2026

Update: 28 January 2025

𝗘𝗸𝗲𝘁𝗮̄𝗵𝘂𝗻𝗮 𝗕𝗼𝗶𝗹 𝗪𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗡𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗱
The boil water notice has now been lifted. River turbidity dropped right down over the weekend after the forecast rain didn’t hang around. Because of that, the water treatment plant was able to get back to normal operations, and by the end of 24 January 2026 we were producing fully compliant drinking water. We’ve now had three days in a row of water quality tests that all meet NZ Drinking Water Standards.

You can now use your tap water as normal for drinking, brushing teeth, and preparing food.
That said, we still ask everyone across the district to please continue conserving water where you can
Council would like to say a huge thank you to our Eketāhuna residents for your patience, cooperation, and understanding during this time.

---------------

We are issuing a boil water notice for Eketāhuna.

Recent rainfall has increased the amount of sediment (cloudiness) in the river that supplies Eketahuna’s water treatment plant. This has made it more difficult for the treatment process to consistently meet drinking water quality standards.

At present, the water treatment plant is unable to reliably reduce sediment levels to within the required limits. As a precautionary measure to protect public health, a boil water notice has been put in place until water quality standards can be consistently met again.

A letter drop will be conducted today and regular updates on this will be provided through the Council information channels (our webpage, Facebook page and Antenno). We appreciate the communities help to spread this message.

Until notified, Eketāhuna residents are advised to boil water before using it for:

  • drinking (including making of sachet juice/drinks);
  • making ice;
  • food preparation;
  • brushing teeth; and
  • preparing infant/toddler formula.

Electric jugs with a cut-off switch can be used as long as they are full – allow the water to come to the boil and wait for it to switch off (do not hold the switch down to increase the boiling time). Water can also be placed in a clean metal pan and brought to a rolling boil for one minute. Boiled water should be covered and allowed to cool in the same container.

People with severely compromised immune systems, infants, pregnant women, and some elderly may be at increased risk. These people should seek advice about drinking water from their health care providers. If you have specific health concerns, consult your doctor or Healthline 0800 611 116.

If you have other houses or tenants on your property, please advise them of the contents of this notice.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Tararua District Council directly on: 06 374 4080 or 06 376 0110.
