Life-changing opportunity available for Tararua youth

12 October 2026

A fully funded Outward-Bound experience valued at $4,200 is available to a young person from the Tararua community.

Through the Mayor’s Taskforce for Jobs (MTFJ), Outward Bound is offering funded places for local rangatahi to take part in a one-week course designed to challenge participants, build confidence, develop resilience and help them discover what they are capable of.

There are potentially two places available between November 2026 and February 2027 for rangatahi aged 18–24.

The full cost of the course is covered, making this a rare opportunity for a young person who may not otherwise have the chance to take part in an Outward-Bound experience.

MTFJ is now running an Expression of Interest process to identify a young person who would genuinely benefit from the opportunity.

To be eligible, applicants must:

  • Be aged 18–24
  • Be a current Tararua District resident
  • Not currently be enrolled in school
  • Preferably be unemployed
  • Be prepared to commit to the experience and make the most of the opportunity

The course will push participants outside their usual environment and comfort zone, while providing opportunities to develop confidence, resilience, teamwork and practical life skills.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for the right young person,” says MTFJ Coordinator Jaron Vince. “It’s not something that comes along very often, particularly with the entire cost of the course covered. We’re looking for someone who is ready to give it a go and would genuinely benefit from the experience.”

The opportunity is open to young people who are currently supported through MTFJ, as well as other eligible Tararua rangatahi who may benefit.

If you think this opportunity could be for you, or you know a young person who should put their hand up, get in touch.
