New citizens welcomed to Tararua District
14 July 2025
This month saw 17 Tararua residents gain New Zealand citizenship in Dannevirke on 3 July and again in Pahiatua on 7 July.
Coming from countries such as India, the Philippines, the United Kingdom, Namibia and Sweden, they were welcomed to their ceremonies by the Deputy Mayor before undertaking their solemn oath or affirmation of allegiance in the presence of their families, the Mayor, Councillors, Iwi, Mike Butterick MP, Community Board and Community Committee representatives and of the 1st Battalion, of the Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment.
The Mayor told those present that "New Zealand is now your country; as a citizen you can call New Zealand your home, and with that comes responsibilities, such as voting, serving on juries and participating in your communities".
Citizenship ceremonies are conducted by Mayors of councils on behalf of the Governor General of New Zealand and are an important civic function and are held periodically throughout the year. We look forward to conducting future ceremonies and welcoming new citizens.
