Coming soon: Results of community conversation about selling council land

25 August 2026

Tararua District Council is thanking the community for its strong response to engagement on the proposed sale of two council-owned properties.

The engagement, which ran from 1 to 31 July 2026, asked the community for their views on the proposed sale of 39 Ransom Street and 39 Gregg Street in Dannevirke. Both properties are currently leased for grazing and were identified as part of a larger project to make sure that properties owned by Council are being used in the best way possible

In total, 101 people made a submission, and 139 written comments were shared. The strongest response came from Dannevirke, and from residents aged 65 to 74.

Council’s Communications Team Manager, Karsten van der Oord, said the results show that Tararua District communities are keen to be more involved in council decision-making.

"Yet again, we’re seeing an increase in the number of people that are taking the time to share their views about local decisions. We’ve been working hard to make it easier to get involved and it’s been awesome to see this paying off.”

No decision to sell has been made; Council will consider the community's feedback before deciding on any next steps. The feedback from the community will be presented to elected members at a council meeting on Wednesday 30 September. The full results of engagement, including every comment, will also be made available publicly for everyone to explore.
