Tararua’s new Council sworn in for 2025–2028 term

31 October 2025

Tararua District’s new Council has officially been sworn in, marking the start of an exciting new chapter for the district. With five new faces joining five returning members, the new Council brings together a mix of fresh perspectives and valuable experience around the table.

The swearing-in ceremony, held at the Dannevirke Town Hall on Thursday 30 October, saw Elected Members sign their official declarations of office — pledging to serve the Tararua community with integrity, fairness, and dedication.

Returning to the Council table in a new role, Scott Gilmore was sworn in as Mayor of Tararua, and Councillor Sharon Wards was formally appointed as Deputy Mayor.

Mayor Scott announced the appointment during the ceremony, describing Councillor Wards as a respected and capable leader who will play a key role in supporting both Council and community over the next three years.

“I’m proud to appoint Councillor Wards as Deputy Mayor of the Tararua District,” Mayor Scott said. “Sharon’s deep understanding of our communities, her strategic approach, strong advocacy and her experience as a returning Councillor make her an outstanding choice for this role.”

In his address, Mayor Scott reflected on the trust placed in the new Council by the community.

“The confidence of our community is both humbling and motivating,” he said.

“We’ve heard clearly what matters most to the people of Tararua - a council that focuses on the essentials, delivers quality services affordably, manages finances responsibly, and makes it easier for people to engage with and trust their local government.”

“If we work together - with open minds, shared purpose, and respect for the people we serve - we can make this a term of real progress and pride for the Tararua District.”

Chief Executive Malcolm Alexander said the swearing-in ceremony marks an important milestone for the district and the organisation.

“This is the moment where the next three years of direction and decision-making begin,” Mr Alexander said. “Our staff are committed to supporting the new Council as they navigate challenges and opportunities ahead. We look forward to working with the Mayor, Deputy Mayor, and Councillors to deliver for our communities.”

Welcoming in the triennium marks a proud moment for the Tararua District. Please join us in congratulating our Elected Members, and we look forward to their mahi shaping the future of our district.
