Our district's fire hydrants are getting a check-up

12 October 2026

Council’s Waters Team will be carrying out fire hydrant inspections and testing across the district in October.

The testing is an important part of maintaining the water supply network and helps ensure hydrants are in good working order and ready for Fire and Emergency New Zealand in an emergency. Testing was carried out in Dannevirke from 5 - 9 October. The team are now moving to Woodville, Pahiatua and Eketāhuna from Monday 12 October to Friday 16 October, with testing carried out between 8.30am and 4:00pm.

Residents may notice water flowing along streets while hydrant flow and pressure testing is underway. This is normal in the process.

Sometimes it can cause tap water to appear discoloured. If this occurs, residents are advised to run a cold-water tap until the water clears. This may take 10–15 minutes or sometimes a little longer. This type of temporary discolouration does not generally present a health risk. Council thanks residents for their patience while the Waters Team carries out this important maintenance work.
