Decide the future of our Māori Ward
22 September 2025
This election, you will also be asked to decide the future of our Māori Ward.
It doesn’t matter if you’re on the Māori or General roll – everyone enrolled can vote in the Māori Ward Poll.
The Poll will be included on your voting papers. You will be asked whether to keep or remove the Tamaki-Nui-a-Rua Māori ward.
It’s important to understand: this is a binding poll. The result will directly determine the structure of our council for years to come. That means every single vote carries real weight. The outcome of the poll will be implemented in the 2028 local election.
If your papers are missing, lost, or damaged, or if you didn’t get around to enrolling, you can still vote. Head into one of our Council Service Centres in Dannevirke, Eketāhuna, Woodville or Pahiatua before 12 noon on 11 October to cast a special vote. It only takes five minutes and it ensures you don’t miss out on having your say.

Candidate Videos
We’ve been putting candidates in the hot seat and asking them the burning questions...
- Who are you?
- What are your top priorities?
- Why are you right for the job?
- What are the biggest challenges facing council right now?
As part of a nationwide push to boost voter turn-out, councils across NZ have worked with candidates to create video statements. This is a first for Tararua (and many other councils).
Every candidate was given the opportunity to take part. Not all did — so to get the full picture, head to our Candidates webpage and check out all the people standing for your community, your values, and for you: https://www.tararuadc.govt.nz/your-council/local-elections/candidates
