Reviewing Council-owned properties

Land Rationalisation: A review of council-owned properties
We’re proposing to sell 2 properties in Dannevirke that might not be delivering as much value as they should.
Why are we doing this?
In 2024, following community direction to reduce spending and make smarter use of resources, we commenced a review of a number of properties owned by council. This resulted in four properties being proposed for change of use or sale. You can learn more about the review on our website: www.tararuadc.govt.nz/projects
Community feedback has already made an impact…
When the property review was first announced in late 2025, Council received significant community feedback. Much of that feedback focused on the proposed sale of the Rural Bus Depot at 53 Denmark Street and the land behind the Eketāhuna Museum on Bengston Street.
Together with a cost benefit analysis, this feedback informed Council's decision to retain these properties, recognising the ongoing value they provide to the community. As a result, Council has decided to retain ownership of both properties and update the associated lease agreements, rather than sell them.
What are the properties that are proposed for sale?
- 39 Ransom Street, Dannevirke (leased land)*
- 39 Gregg Street, Dannevirke (leased land)
* 39 Ransom Street is classified as Reserve Land and will also require detailed process to remove this status before the sale can be completed.
Mayor Scott Gilmore emphasized the importance of projects like this one.
“This review is about being responsible with public assets and using ratepayer funding wisely, particularly as we continue our real focus on affordability and efficiency.
“We heard clearly from our communities that some of these properties continue to deliver real value, and that feedback has directly influenced council’s decisions not to proceed with those properties.”
“Any next steps will only be taken after open engagement and careful consideration of what best serves the district.”
Public engagement is open for 4 weeks, from 1 July and closes 31 July. This is the community’s opportunity to share views on the proposed next steps for these properties.
