Alf Rowden Humanitarian Award Winner: Margaret Chapple

16 June 2026

If you’ve spent time in Eketāhuna, chances are you've crossed paths with Margaret Chapple.

From volunteering in local organisations to supporting with local events, Margaret is always willing to lend a hand and never expects anything in return. She doesn’t hesitate to give her time to helping others and supporting her community. It is that selfless dedication that has seen her named the recipient of this years' Alf Rowden Humanitarian Award.

Margaret moved to Eketāhuna in 2008 and quickly became involved in local organisations. Since then, she has become a familiar face across the community, volunteering at the Information Centre and Opportunity Shop, supporting the Golf Club, and helping at functions and events through the Eketāhuna Club.

Those who nominated Margaret described her as someone whose "heart is in Eketāhuna". They spoke of her commitment to helping others and the way she continues to support the community while managing her own health challenges and caring for her husband.

Mayor Scott shared his congratulations for Margaret’s achievements.

“Through her many years of volunteering and service, Margaret has made a tremendous contribution to Eketāhuna and is a very deserving recipient of this award.”

The Alf Rowden Humanitarian Award was established by the Eketāhuna Lions Club as a tribute to the late Alf Rowden, a local electrician, community volunteer, and Deputy Mayor who dedicated many years of service to Eketāhuna. Mr Rowden was deeply involved in community life and believed in giving back to the town he called home.

This award honours those who continue that tradition of service and commitment to others and is presented annually by the Eketāhuna Community Board.

Chair Steen McGhie said Margaret was more than worthy of receiving the award.

"The Award is all about recognising people who put others first, and Margaret is one of those people who quietly keeps our community running. It’s awesome to be able to recognise her for everything that she does and show her that people notice."

Tararua District Council and the Eketāhuna Community Board would like to congratulate Margaret on receiving the Alf Rowden Humanitarian Award and thank her for the many ways she continues to support Eketāhuna.
