Dannevirke Town Hall set for a fresh new look

22 December 2025

The Dannevirke Town Hall is about to receive its first full exterior repaint in 20 years, with work starting in mid-January. The project will give the much-loved heritage building a refreshed and protected exterior, with colours selected in line with guidance from Heritage New Zealand. Council has contracted Martin Beveridge Ltd to carry out the repainting, which includes the exterior walls, roof, and the nearby public toilet block.

What’s happening and when?

Scaffolding will begin going up around the building from 14 January, a process expected to take around three weeks. Once in place, the repainting will begin and take approximately six weeks to complete. During this time, the Town Hall will remain in use, but there will be some temporary changes around the site to keep everyone safe.

Changes to access and traffic

The road behind the Town Hall (between McPhee Street and Allardice Street) will be closed while scaffolding and painting are underway.

The public car park will remain open, with only a small number of parks unavailable. Access from High Street will stay the same.

The High Street frontage of the Town Hall will stay open for pedestrians.

Dannevirke Town Hall bookings will continue as normal.

Why this work is important

After two decades since the last full exterior repaint, the Town Hall is due for maintenance to protect the building from weathering and keep it looking its best.

This work is about protecting and preserving one of Dannevirke’s key heritage buildings, helping ensure it remains safe, weather-tight, and looking great for years to come.

Council will continue to update the community as the project progresses.
