About the Award

Now in its 38th year, the Wackrow Memorial Youth Award was established in 1987 in memory of Constable Graeme Wackrow, a young police officer tragically killed while serving in Dannevirke. His parents gifted the award to the community to honour his legacy.

The award recognises outstanding young people aged 14–19 from the Dannevirke area who show dedication to community service and voluntary work. Judged by a panel of five community members, the award places a strong focus on contributions that benefit the North Tararua Ward.

The winner receives $500, a miniature trophy to keep, and the honour of holding the Wackrow trophy for a year. Second and third place receive $300 and $200 respectively. Past winners are not eligible for re-nomination, and the award is only presented if three or more nominations are received.

An honours board listing all past winners is proudly displayed at the Dannevirke Police Station.
