NZTA is investing in the resilience of the transport network and has approved a $3.1 million application from Tararua District Council for resilience measures to protect the road network from storm damage.

Following the storms of 2022 and 2023, Tararua Alliance has been reviewing the root causes of high-cost emergency works repairs and presented a proposal to NZTA to fund low-cost interventions that reduce the risk of storm damage to our roads.  TDC sought $3.1 million and has been successful in gaining the full amount.

The Funding Assistance Rate (FAR) for this funding is 73 cents.  This means for every dollar, NZTA puts in 73 cents and Council puts in 27 cents from rates. Funding for the Council portion has been allowed for in the Long-Term Plan as roading resilience was recognised as something that would add long-term value.  This funding approval means we can progress with plans for putting that money into the road network.

Tararua Alliance Network Manager Andrew Desmond says the funding will be spent on low-cost drainage and slope protection measures, such as culvert upgrades and roadside land stabilisation to keep water away from the roads.

“The funding is predominantly focused on hill country where we see the most storm damage and associated costs.  This work programme is expected to run over the next two financial years, with work coordinated alongside other road maintenance activities.”
