Construction on a major upgrade of Pahiatua's drinking water network has kicked off today, Monday 28 September, with work starting on Boundary Road as part of the Pahiatua Water Supply Project.

The project will deliver around three kilometres of new drinking water infrastructure, including a new transfer main and trunk main, helping improve the resilience, reliability and future capacity of the town's water supply.

Tararua District Council Group Manager Operations Hamish Featonby said the project was a significant investment in essential infrastructure.

"Parts of the existing water main have required repairs in recent years. This project will help ensure Pahiatua has a reliable drinking water supply for years to come."

Construction is expected to take about one year and will progress through Boundary Road, Julia Street, Dawson Street, Edward Street, Huxley Street, Wakeman Street, Titoki Street and the reservoir access track. The project also includes a crossing under State Highway 2.

Residents and road users can expect to see traffic management, construction vehicles and crews working throughout the project area. Temporary lane closures, minor delays and short-term access restrictions may be required at times. Affected residents will receive advance notice before work begins in their street.
