Tararua District Council is deeply saddened by the tragic passing of Councillor Peter Johns.

Peter served our community with dedication and distinction for almost fifteen years as a councillor, making a significant contribution to the district and to the many committees and projects he was involved in over the years.

A passionate advocate for Woodville and our wider district, Peter was a character known for speaking his mind, standing up for his community, and always bringing energy, commitment and humour to the council table. He was excited for the future of Woodville and its potential to grow following the opening of the Te Ahu a Turanga–Manawatū Tararua Highway and the proposed district plan.

He was deeply invested in the future of the district and worked tirelessly to help move Tararua forward.

Mayor Scott Gilmore said Councillor Johns’ passing was a great loss for both Council and the wider Tararua community.

"We are devastated by our loss. Peter has become much more than a valued colleague; he was also a good friend.”

"Peter cared deeply about his community and the people he represented. He brought passion, conviction and a genuine desire to make Tararua a better place."

"He also had a wonderful sense of humour and was a pleasure to be around. Council meetings will not feel the same without him. He will be greatly missed."

On behalf of the Council and staff, Mayor Gilmore extends condolences to Peter's family, friends, fellow councillors, and all those who knew him.

"Peter devoted many years of service to this district and leaves behind a lasting legacy. Our thoughts are with his loved ones at this difficult time."

Arrangements for Peter’s farewell will be communicated in due course.
