New free household battery drop-off point coming to Dannevirke Library
12 October 2026
From Friday 16 October, Tararua residents will have a new, convenient place to dispose of their household batteries, with a dedicated collection unit being installed in the foyer at Dannevirke Library.
The drop-off point is free to use and available during the library’s opening hours, making it easier for people to dispose of household batteries safely and responsibly.
The initiative aims to keep household batteries out of rubbish and recycling bins, where they can pose a serious fire risk. Batteries can ignite when damaged or crushed during waste collection and processing, causing fires in collection trucks and at transfer stations.
Providing an accessible drop-off point gives the community a simple alternative for disposing of unwanted household batteries and helps reduce these risks.
Residents using the collection unit are reminded that only household batteries can be deposited in the unit. Rubbish and other recyclable items must not be placed inside.
The new collection point is a small but important step towards safer waste disposal and protecting the community’s waste and recycling services.
Remember to bring your household batteries along next time you visit the Dannevirke Library, and help keep them out of rubbish and recycling bins.
Free household battery drop-off is also available at any of our Transfer Stations.
