Recycling plans for Norsewood and Ormondville

17 November 2025

Tararua District Council is continuing work to make recycling easier and more accessible for residents in Norsewood and Ormondville. We’re reviewing how best to provide convenient and sustainable options for both communities — from new drop-off points to the future of kerbside recycling.

Drop-off Recycling Bins

Norsewood

The previous public recycling bins in Norsewood were removed at the landowner’s request, which means there’s currently no local drop-off site available.

Council continues to explore council-owned or leased land as potential locations for a new facility. For this, some site works and small capital investment will be needed, which are being considered through future funding programmes such as the Long-Term Plan and Waste Minimisation and Management Plan (WMMP).

Ormondville

Good news for Ormondville residents, a suitable council-owned site has been confirmed for a new drop-off recycling point. The bins will be moved from the Memorial Hall carpark to the end of Dump Road, Ormondville, on Monday 1 December 2025. There will only be one large container bin, designed to accommodate mixed household recycling on one side, and 3 colour sorted glass slots on the other side.

Funding for the bins has been secured through the WMMP levy, and installation is expected to happen soon. For more information on how the WMMP levy works, check out Overview of the waste disposal levy | Ministry for the Environment

Until a new Norsewood site is identified, Norsewood residents are welcome to use the Ormondville recycling centre. Council recognises the importance of having a local recycling option for Norsewood residents and is actively working to confirm a suitable site.

Kerbside Recycling Collection

Council is also looking at future options for kerbside recycling in Norsewood and Ormondville.
The current manual collection service will continue under the existing contract until the end of November 2025. After this date, manual collections will stop while Council works on a new long-term solution.

Work is underway to explore what a future kerbside recycling service could look like and how it might be funded. Before any changes are made, Council will consult with the community to understand local preferences and support.

What Happens Next

Over the coming months, Council will complete the installation of the new Ormondville recycling bins and confirm a suitable location for a future drop-off site in Norsewood. Work will also continue on reviewing kerbside recycling options and planning how best to deliver these services in the future. Council looks forward to working with both communities as these improvements take shape and ensuring local recycling solutions meet the needs of residents now and into the future.
