Eketāhuna - a quick water update

20 January 2026

With some districts already putting on their restrictions, we’re keeping a close eye on water use across Tararua, and at the moment Eketāhuna’s water use is around 55% higher than this time last year. Across the rest of the district, water use is sitting closer to normal levels, with some towns slightly higher than last year as well.

We’ve recently conducted leak detection checks on the public network in Eketāhuna, and no major issues were found. With continued dry weather and low river levels, high water use puts extra pressure on the town’s water supply. To help manage this, we’re asking everyone in Eketāhuna – and across the district – to continue being mindful of how and when water is used.

How you can help avoid water restrictions in your town There are lots of simple ways to make a difference:

Report any suspected public leaks (even small ones) so they can be checked quickly

Check your property for leaks, including taps, toilets and outdoor hoses

Keep showers short

Use washing machines and dishwashers efficiently

Be careful with outdoor water use - especially during the hottest parts of the day

We'll keep monitoring water use and river levels closely and will provide updates as needed. Thanks Eketāhuna - small changes across the community add up! For more water information visit  Water conservation tips for all | Tararua District Council
