Freedom Camping Bylaw Adopted

The Tararua Freedom Camping Bylaw has been developed with the help of the Minisitry of Business, Innovation & Employment (MBIE) funding, and feedback from stakeholders, our communities, and visitors.

It was adopted by Council on 27 August and commences on 15 September 2025.
The bylaw sets out the following:

• General conditions for freedom camping (Clause 5)
• Specific areas where freedom camping is prohibited (Schedule 1)
• Sites where freedom camping has some restrictions (Schedule 2)

We'll now work on signage (also thanks to MBIE) about freedom camping.
