Wandering Dogs - do's, doo-doo's and don't do's

2 March 2026

From miscellaneous droppings to dodging traffic, a wandering dog can create a nuisance for the local community.

When you sign-up to be a dog-Mum or dog-Dad, it comes with lots of responsibility. But it’s not just responsibility for your dogs well-being , it’s also for the well-being of your community and making sure your dog is not causing a nuisance (or posing a danger).

Wandering and uncontrolled dogs are at risk of being involved in motor vehicle accidents. And 7 out of 10 neighbours are 100% lying when they say they “really don’t mind” when your dog comes to visit.

You can learn more about your obligations and responsibilities as a dog owner in our handy-dandy Dog Owners Handbook available at our service centres or at Animals | Tararua District Council
