Tararua businesses can apply for interim Cyclone support

Tararua District Council and Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) are partnering to support businesses to recover from the effects of cyclone Gabrielle. MBIE has provided Council with a $355,000 grant to help local businesses that have been affected by Cyclone Gabrielle to get back on their feet. Tararua District Council is one of the seven agencies in the country that is eligible for a part of the support package.

“Our priority is to get this initial emergency support out as quickly as possible. Those who are on the ground in communities know best how to do that. The Government has established agreements with local delivery partners to make it happen,” said Minister of Finance Grant Robertson.

Tararua District Council Mayor Tracey Collis says: ‘We are very grateful for this grant from MBIE. Businesses in our district have been affected in many ways, some have had physical damage, and many have not been able to operate as usual due to a variety of reasons. With this business support package, we will be able to assist their unique or individual needs.”

The Government is providing $25 million in grants to help businesses in cyclone-affected recover. This is part of the initial $50 million emergency package agreed by Cabinet last week.

Council will be administering the business support grants. Businesses, sole traders and self-employed people may be eligible for support if they meet the criteria.

The main focus of the support will help firms maintain cashflow and position them for a successful recovery. Grants may also support firms that face significant cashflow issues due to continued challenges with customer access, ability to source stock, supply chain issues, inability to operate as usual due to physical damage to equipment or premises, or delays in insurance assessment and repairs. Businesses that support farming and horticulture will be eligible.
