Heavy Rain Watch includes the Tararua District

Published 23 Feb 2023

MetService have issued two Heavy Rain Watches that will affect the Tararua District from 6am Thursday 23 February through to mid day Saturday 25 February.  Updates to the weather can be viewed on the MetService website at www.metservice.com

Council is monitoring the forecasted weather and will provide updates on our Facebook and Antenno channels.  We are particularly monitoring upcoming weather for the communities that were affected by the recent Cyclone Gabrielle rain and flooding.

Rain volumes are not expected to peak anywhere near the level experienced during Cyclone Gabrielle but the efffect on our land, already saturated from last week will likely result in ground movement that could lead to futher slips along our roads and properties.

We recommend only essential travel is conducted and to keep monitoring our Current Road Status page on our website before all travel at: https://www.tararuadc.govt.nz/services/roading/current-road-status

It is important that your household has a plan for any emergency event and that a grab bag is available for each household member.  Each grab bag should include 3 days of food and drinking water and any required medication you depend upon.  Make sure everyone in the household knows your plan.

The following website will assist you packing a grab bag and preparing for an emergency:

  2. free-call or text 1737 to talk to a trained counsellor
