Universal Water Meters Update
8 September 2025
Universal water meter project update
We’re continuing work on the installation of water meters across the Tararua District.
Originally, we planned to consult with the community in September on the options for
how water charging could work once meters are fully in place.
However, we want to get this right before we begin consultation, as we
need to gather more water usage data. This will help us provide the most
accurate and fair water charge options for you to consider.
Consultation will take place at a later date (to be confirmed).
We know there’s been some confusion around how water charges will work. Here are the key points:
- This supports fairer and more transparent charging for water
- Water meter charging won’t begin until charging options have been consulted on and all meters are installed throughout the district, this will take at least 3-5 years.
- You won’t be paying twice – water charges will be a separate charge and will be taken off your general rates.
- The exact charging structure will be determined following consultation with the community
To kick off this stage of the project, 200 meters will be installed in Dannevirke. These meters will help us begin gathering water usage data so we can build a clearer picture of how water is used across the district. For more information about the Water Metering Project, visit:
