Woodville pool closed this summer

The Woodville Pool will be closed this summer as repair works to the pool have to be extended. Delays to the pool maintenance have been caused by a combination of supply issues caused by COVID-19, wet weather, and previously unknown structural issues.

The recent repair works to the pool, originally built more than 50 years ago, revealed that structural deficiencies have resulted in large water leakages over previous summers. Specialist works to repair these issues have been delayed because of supply shortages in materials and wet weather conditions. During the repairs, suspect samples of existing pool pipes were sent away for testing, which confirmed the presence of asbestos concrete. The testing and removal of this has caused further delays.

Council, the pool operator – WIFI, and contractors want to make sure structural and forward planned maintenance works are fully carried out to mitigate the need for works next season. Completion of the work is expected towards the end of the summer. For this reason, the decision was made to not open the pool this season.

We understand how important the pool is for our communities in summer, especially our tamariki. We are working hard to get this sorted so that we can make sure the pool can be open next summer.

The swimming pools in Dannevirke,Pahiatua and Eketahuna will be open as usual. Swimming Pools | Tararua District Council (tararuadc.govt.nz)
